DIY Spice Jar Rack

April 28, 2013 By Jacque 27 Comments

DIY Spice Jar Rack by theDIYvillage.com

Recently I decided it would be a great idea to gut our existing pantry and build a custom pantry.  The process has been long and flat out exhausting, but I am happy to the project is finally complete!  One thing I really wanted for my new pantry was a decorative spice jar rack.  The problem is they all look the same and have way more containers than I would EVER use.  I don’t know about you but mustard seeds are not in high demand in our house!  My solution, create my own custom spice rack.  It’s a lot easier than you might think!

Materials:

1 – 1/4″ x 2″ x 2′  Poplar (or pine)
1 – 1 /4″ x 3″ x 2′
2 – 1/2″ x 3″ x 2′
Wood Glue – found HERE
Clamps – found HERE
Paint – found HERE
8 – Jars with Lids – found HERE
8 – Vinyl Labels – found HERE

Step 1: Cut the wood to length.  If you are using 2 1/2″ diameter jars like shown you will need your pieces to be at least 10″ long.

Step 2:  Lay one 1/2″x3″ board down and glue a 1/4″ x2″ to the front and a 1/2″x3″ to the back clamp and let dry.

Step 3:  Glue one 1/4″x2″ to the front and one 1/2″x3″ to the bottom  of a 1/2″x3″  board clamp and let set up.  (Make sure your edges are flush)

Step 4:  Glue a 1/2″x3″ to the very top of your spice jar rack carefully clamp and let dry.

Step 5: Paint your spice jar rack. You can find the color I used HERE.

Step 6: Create labels for your jars using a vinyl cutter.  If you like you could also use chalk board labels or chalk board paint to create a different but also pleasing look.

Step 7: Clean your jar and align the label

Step 8: Burnish your label allowing the lettering to stick to the jar

In an afternoon you can create your own custom spice jar rack!

Very cute idea and congrats for winning. That is just wonderful. Oh, don’t rule out mustard seed, I just had to go find/buy some because I made quick pickles. 🙂

I love your spice jars. What font did you use and what kind of paper/vinyl did you cut them out of? It looks silvery, and I love it! Great job.

The spice rack is really cute and a fun idea! You could actually use a stamp printer to label them as well. Something like this would work very well:

No, sorry I don’t sell labels. The font I used was American Typewriter.

Thank you for getting back with me. I have the exact same bottles and I really like how you did yours. I have one more question. What program did you use to create your labels?
