I know I am probably not the only mother out there with at little toddler girl with a head full of baby fine hair. Poor Jossie has a beautiful head of brown hair that is so hard to keep in place. I end up using the rubber bands that even though they tout as smooth always end up breaking her hair and causing damage to beautiful hair! I keep buying hair barrettes in hopes that maybe, just maybe I will buy a pack that will not slip out of her silky hair, with no such luck! About the only thing that stays in her hair are the clips you get that are usually attached to hair bows. I love a good hair bow but don’t like them everyday. Neither does Jossie!
I spent quite some time brainstorming how to keep barrettes from slipping out the ideas included puffy paint and super expensive salon style clips. I tried both and they just don’t work. Finally I figured I would try something that is anti slip, like the shelf liner in my drawers! So now that you know where I am coming from I’m going to go ahead and share my awesome barrette trick with you all!
MATERIALS:

Hair Barrettes – found HERE
Glue – found HERE
Shelf Liner – Smooth Top – found HERE
Scissors – found HERE
INSTRUCTIONS:
Start off by trimming the shelf liner to fit just slightly wider than the lower portion of the clip.
Make sure it extends at least 1/2″ past the end of the base so that you have something to hold onto without gluing your fingers. (Don’t ask how I know, please.)
Apply a small amount of glue to the lower portion of the clip.
Line the shelf liner strip up, smooth side down, and carefully press onto the glue.
Set barrettes upside down to dry overnight (depending on the type of glue you use).
Once the glue is dry trim any excess that extends past the end of the clip.
It will look something like this.
When the barrettes are in the hair you never see the shelf liner! And the best part, this works! It REALLY REALLY works! I can put a barrette in her hair in the morning and maybe have to fix it one time during the day, which I thought would never happen in a million years! That includes playing hard at school and little gym! I wish I had been brave enough to try this sooner because it’s a game changer for me and doing her hair!

I’m a woman with fine hair and I’ve been wearing little girl barrettes. This is awesome! I have liner material that I use for just about everything except barrettes, I’m looking forward to making some grown-up barrettes!

I’ve been going CRAZY trying to find barrettes to hold the fine hair of a very active six year old. I am not a crafty person, but I will be trying this. No hair accessories company can come up with something like this?
