Over the Door Organizer for Winter Storage

January 20, 2013 By Jacque 27 Comments

Have you seen all the cool uses for over the door organizers?
I have seen them for shoes, in pantries for smaller items, craft rooms, and even had a friend use one at her wedding in the bridal suite for anything and everything you might have forgotten but need!
It was great but none of these were things I could really use in my life.

That was until I realized that Matt and I have a big problem.
We love winter accessories!
To the point that some might consider it an addiction?
We can’t help ourselves when we see a cool hat or scarf we just have to have them!

What that love of winter has left us with is an abundance of hats, scarves, and gloves.
In the amount of two large totes!

WinterStorage

As great as the totes are for storing the items, they are horrible for being able to see what we have.

My solution …

An over the door shoe organizer!

I picked this one up for $ 8.99 at Home Goods.

It’s perfect for all of my favorite accessories!

We can easily see what we have without digging through the totes.

It’s slim so it hardly takes up any space in our coat closet and leaves the floor area tote free …

WinterStorage

for the occasional nosey visitor!

Do you use and over the door organizer for anything other than shoes?

Nice. And I really liked the pic with the DVD storage idea in the closet too.

Thanks Ricky! The DVD strorage racks are from IKEA, cost around $ 5.00 each.

That’s a great idea! We currently store our winter accessories in an annoying pile in the closet and I try not to think about it. I actually have a great spot for an over-the-door organizer like this. Thanks for the inspiration!

What a clever idea! I do share your addiction and have a huge basket with a lid, but I often forget about it since it’s out of the way. Love your solution!

Love it! Mainly because I’m on the same page as you: I suggested this to my husband just the other day! Our home came with two very skinny coat closets, plus I’m short and hate reaching up to the way-too-high-for-me shelf above the coat rack!

We have been using this exact idea for a number of years already with our 5 kids. We have a clear organizer so they can see what is in each pocket. We also designated 1 row per child – bottom for the youngest, higher up for the oldest. The top row is all the extras they have kicking around. It is easy for them to return their stuff and easy for them to find. It has been the perfect solution for our very space-limited entrance!

Wow 5 children, I can imagine you are super busy, I love that you use one row per child – Perfect!

This is what we did in our old house. We put ours up next to the garage door, actually in the garage. It worked so well. In our new house, we have a mudroom and cubbies, but I’m actually thinking I might go back to this because it is easier to see what you have–and what might be missing!
